Growing Pains

I learned

so long ago

that I am the only one

that can protect me.

I learned

recently

that it is possible to protect

oneself too completely.

That growth and love and joy

only happen

with vulnerability.

And pain.

In other words, even though our history has informed us that the two go hand-in-hand, in truth, one is actually possible without the other. Vulnerability can be a tender kiss on the cheek, when administered by the hand of a trusted friend or loved one. Vulnerability allows us to exhale.
